Turkey white bean chili and the perfect glazed sugar cookies

It has been so cold this week in St Louis and after a week in West Palm Beach, the weather was even more brutal. I wanted to make something warm and comforting that we could eat throughout the week as an easy dinner. We don’t have a microwave at my office (I know! Tell me about it), so chili would be a special treat after the workday.

I used a recipe from Food and Wine magazine, but ended up tweaking it so much that it doesn’t really look like the original. Theirs was a spicy chicken chili with black beans and I went with turkey, white beans and different spices. You really can’t go wrong. Pro tip: don’t rub your nose after removing the seeds from the jalapenos. I knew they could do damage to your eyeballs, but I had no idea about noses. My nose was on fire. Seriously. I kept blowing my nose, which only made it worse. And if you actually want it spicy, keep a few seeds in there.

Serve with lots of oyster crackers, cheese, and wine (or milk!) for the perfect chilly night dinner.


  • 1 white or yellow onion, chopped
  • Olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 4 tsps chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsps dried oregano
  • 2 jalapeño peppers, seeds removed, and chopped
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large can of crushed tomatoes with their juice
  • 1 can white cannellini beans
  • Oyster crackers
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  1. In a large saucepan, heat the evoo over low heat. Add the onion and garlic; cook until they start to soften.
  2. Increase the heat to moderate and stir in the ground turkey. Cook until they are no longer pink. Stir in the spices: chili powder, cumin, oregano, and salt. Add the jalapeños, the tomatoes with their juice, and the broth. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Stir in the beans and simmer for another ten minutes or so to allow the chili to thicken.

For a sweet treat to follow the chili, I made Sally’s Baking Addiction’s sugar cookie recipe with the best glaze I have ever found. I know I use her recipes a lot, but they were PERFECT. Recipe is here since I didn’t change a thing!
