Father’s Day Weekend: Spaghetti and Meatballs + The Alexander

I’m lucky enough to have my dad only two and a half hours away now that I am back in Indy and he has been so helpful with Winston’s puppy training, helping me get situated in my condo, and just being there for me when I need him. For Father’s Day, he came for the weekend and we kept it pretty simple. We love spending time together riding bikes, watching Top Gear, going for walks downtown, Trader Joe’s runs….the list is endless. He also happens to appreciate my cooking, so I decided to make classic spaghetti and meatballs, which is something my dad made for me a lot as a kid. I’ve made the Pioneer Woman’s version a few times and they are the best recipe I have found. My mom always said he managed to use every dish, pot, and pan in the kitchen to make it, but it was the best! He always served the spaghetti with peas, so now I do too. When we went to Casa’s (a Fort Wayne institution), I always got a single meatball as a kid. SO good. I also made a large salad and took some leftover bread, brushed on melted butter and crushed garlic to make impromptu garlic bread. My dad was really excited about being sent with leftovers.

We went to Bakersfield on Friday night for the best guac in the city and PBR in boot glasses. The PBR is $2 and my dad couldn’t believe that they had it – I had to explain that he has entered the land of hipsters. What was once old is now cool. On Saturday we went to the Alexander for drinks on the rooftop deck. The hotel is really eclectic and such a neat place to take people when they visit. They serve you popcorn with truffle oil in little paper bags and they have one of my favorite local beers, Sunking’s Weemac (I love my stouts). The black currant ice tea is also amazing and we shared edamame with pink salt. So thankful for time with my dad!



Recipe via Pioneer Woman 

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup panko (I was out of panko, so I put a slice of bread in the mini food processor)
1/2 cup milk
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 medium onion, diced
1 large jar marinara sauce
2 cups grated mozzarella

Mix the meat with the breadcrumbs, milk, garlic, salt and pepper, and knead the mixture together with you hands. Roll into heaping tablespoon-sized rolls.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 1 minute. Add the meatballs between the onions and brown for 1 minute.

Pour in the jar of marinara and shake the skillet gently to mix. Put on a lid and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Add a side of cooked spaghetti, top with parm and torn basil and enjoy!




I got my dad a monogrammed wood pocket knife from Etsy for Father’s Day and he loved it. On the front is his initials and on the back I had XO and my nickname engraved. I also got a new print for my condo and I am in love with the saying.



My dad requested lemon zest scones for breakfast and I could not refuse.
