My Love Affair with La Croix + Mimi’s Meatballs + Indy Reads

This post is really all about the amazingness of Mimi’s Meatballs, but I decided to share my favorite La Croix recipes too. Sparkling water is very Italian, so it works! I gave up pop (soda, coke, whatever you call it depending on your location in the great US of A) a few years ago and have not looked back since. Other than the occasional root beer float or 7Up when I am sick, I rarely have it. Instead, I am hooked on La Croix. Not all fizzy water is created equal and La Croix is by far the best (in my humble opinion). It is ‘responsibly sourced here in the US,’ if you’re into that kind of thing. There are no artificial sweeteners, so no worries about that lab rat and his 10,000 packs of aspartame. I remember my brother writing a paper about aspartame for one of his biochem classes and it stuck with me. My mom and I both gave up Sweet n Low and Splenda and immediately noticed a difference. That said, life is short and everyone has their vices. At this point, I would rather just have the sugar.

There are supposedly twelve flavors, but I am yet to find all of them. You can’t go wrong with berry, grapefruit (aka pamplemousse), orange, or lime and the passionfruit is my favorite, but it’s hard to find. The verdict is still up in the air on lemon, coconut, and pure.

It is an acquired taste, but I was discussing fizzy water with a friend and we both agreed that our taste buds adjusted accordingly. It’s refreshing and great to dilute juices. Sometimes I dilute orange juice (extra pulp, please) with the orange La Croix. I also have a Soda Stream and keep a bottle of plain sparkling water in the fridge. You can add almost any flavor to some prosecco for a nice summer treat.


  • White wine of any kind
  • LaCroix mango or orange
  • brandy
  • Slices of mango, pineapple, melon

Combine equal parts wine and brandy, add fruits and let it marinate in the fridge for a few hours. Add the LaCroix. Enjoy!

MY FAVORITE GRAPEFRUIT COCKTAIL (My friend Joanna got me on a grapefruit kick)
(makes one drink)
  • juice of one lime
  • 2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1½ ounces grapefruit La Croix (plain sparkling water also works)
Salt rim and garnish
  • 2 teaspoons kosher and/or sea salt
  • Lime wedge, for lining the rim
Put all of the above in your shaker and shake it up! Enjoy!

Now onto Mimi’s! If you live in Indy, you need to get over to Mimi’s Meatballs ASAP. If you don’t live in Indy and you like meatballs, you should still make the pilgrimage. If you don’t like meatballs, then I can’t help you. I had heard really good things, but it is just far enough down Mass Ave, that it was an after thought to go there. I finally ventured across College Avenue and I am so glad I did. My dad is in town and he did not need much convincing.

Mimi Blue, the restaurant’s namesake, was raised in Indianapolis “back when downtown was the only town, when people got dressed up for the theater and restaurant dining was a luxury.” Here is a little history from their website:

“Mimi Blue Meatballs is a tribute to our mother “Mimi Blue” Kosene. Mimi was a Lady, endowed with manners, taste, and an easy social grace. She loved good food whether dining out or cooking for a hard-working husband and three sons. Every home-cooked meal had to satisfy the whole family, as well as any friends who often stopped by. Cooking was the way she brought us together, kept us healthy, and showed us Love.”

The menu is organized really well and there are black dry erase markers in the flower vases for you to fill out your order on the laminated menu. You can get sliders with little buns, or a set of three, or even order them individually. I went the single route and ordered two turkey meatballs with marinara and a side salad. The turkey was really flavorful and moist. The marinara was chunky and you could tell it was homemade. My dad went with the classic (beef + sausage) meatball sliders and the marinara. We shared the mac and cheese, which was SPICY. I needed more than a fizzy water to get it down. It was really good, but you have been warned. The bread crumb topping and jalapenos made it special.

Our server was from California and loved downtown Indy, which made me happy. It’s always nice to see a transplant that really enjoys what downtown has to offer. I will definitely be going back to Mimi’s and they have a different meatball special every week, so there’s always something different.

Across the street is Homespun Indy, which sells all Indiana products and has the cutest, quirkiest goods. You can buy my friend Kim’s artwork there or here if you’re an out of towner. Her calligraphy is the best and I am so glad she’s back in Indy! I also finally went to Indy Reads bookstore! Such a cool space and it’s great to see a bookstore still alive and kicking (that isn’t a Barnes and Noble). Once upon a time, downtown had a Borders and it was my weekend ritual to browse the latest and greatest. Most of the books at Indy Reads are used and affordable.
