Public Greens Inspired Gazpacho + Corn, Black Bean Salad + IMA’s Dream Cars + 100 Acres

This was one of those weeks where I did the best I could to put out fires and thought about work long after I left the office each night. Then I reminded myself that this is PR. It’s constantly changing, fast paced, and all consuming. This might be why I love it most of the time. As long as you have great clients, purposeful work, and passion for the subject matter, it will always be rewarding. I will most likely be working this weekend, so I decided to take full advantage of my Saturday.

I just purchased a membership to the Indianapolis Museum of Art and decided to check out my new perks. The IMA had always been free since I have lived in Indy over the last six years, however, they recently started charging admission. Hold onto your seats, are you ready for this? Adult tickets are $18. I KNOW! That’s what I said too. In true form, I am my father’s daughter, I had kind of sort of boycotted one of my favorite places in Indy. However, there is an event coming up that I want to attend and members get a discount, so I thought why not look into it. To my surprise, a year long membership is only $55 for two adults and a few kids. Hello! Obvious choice and I plan to go as much as I can until next August. I could spend days looking at the artwork and the rotating exhibits are always interesting. The 100 Acres and gardens are worth the $55 alone and everyone should support the arts. I truly believe the arts (and music) are just as important as math and science in education. Everyone needs a creative outlet and while we all have different talents, you never know what you’re capable of until you try. This coming from someone who once glued herself to the carpet in her bedroom. Shortly after, my dad had the ‘You should get a summer internship’ talk. Eleven internships later and I can thank my craftiness for my professional success.

The Dream Cars exhibit was awesome and as a car kid (I really, really love cars), it was one of the best exhibits I’ve seen at the IMA over the years. They have cars ranging from the 1930’s to modern day. My favorites were the Norman Timbs (reminded me of something that should have been in Harry Potter) and the 2001 BMW (for 14 years old, it was still a modern concept car).



After the IMA, I decided to venture over to Broadripple to try out Public Greens (Patachou’s earthy garden inspired place on the Monon). The wait was 45 minutes, but I was determined and that was also a sign that it must be pretty good. The menu is written on a chalkboard and you can get one item for $6, two items for $10, or three items for $14. I was hungry so I went with the triple. A girl has got to eat. I got gazpacho, simple chicken, and a black bean and corn salad. All of these dishes are on my summer rotation list and I have included my favorite recipes for both below. Overall, I would go back, but maybe at an odd time. I was there from 1-2 today and it was really busy.

The large deck was perfect for people watching along the Monon. I saw a lot of dogs, runners, cyclists, and a man in ‘merica flag shorts. The cutest sight is the moms and dads with their kids on the back of their bikes. I hope to be a strong, fit, rockstar mom with a kid on the back of my bike someday, also with some snacks in tow. There is also something great about listening to ‘Big Pimpin’ on a deck, eating hipster, locally grown food. The owner, Martha Hoover, has her own goats and all of them are named after rappers. Tupac is an occasional star of her instagram account.

Recipe via Food & Wine

  • 6 ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1/2 large cucumber—peeled, halved, seeded and cut into chunks
  • 1 green bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar
  • salt

In a blender or food processor, combine the tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, garlic, water, oil and vinegar and process until coarsely pureed. I like it a little chunky. I want to be able to see and tell what is in it. Public Greens’ version even had thinly sliced cucumber slices as a garnish in their version. Season with salt and refrigerate until chilled. This is also really good served with a crusty baguette.

Recipe via Once upon a Chef
  • 1 can of black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 ears fresh cooked corn, kernels cut off the cob
  • red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp sugar (I use equal amounts honey instead)
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lime zest (be sure to zest limes before juicing them)
  • 3-4 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, plus more for garnish
  • avocado, diced

Combine all of the ingredients except for the avocado in a large bowl and mix well. Cover and chill for a few hours or overnight. Right before serving, add the avocado and mix, being careful not to mash avocados. Garnish with a more chopped cilantro! Enjoy!
