Cherry Margarita Cookies + My Favorite Email Subscriptions + Growing Places Indy

My friend Ali invited me to join her and her family tomorrow night at the symphony and I wanted to make a dessert that would be fun, just like her family. They are Jimmy Buffett fans, so I googled margarita cookies and was not disappointed. I chose the recipe below and these are surprisingly good! I substituted dried cherries because the dried strawberries were impossible to find and my only other option was the baby food aisle. I was not that determined. The sweet, tart cherries are a nice complement to the lime zest and tequila. I think it works! After a crazy week of 11+ hour days and feeling like I haven’t had a lot of Winston time, tonight was the perfect Friday night to bake and dance in my kitchen with Winnie to some motown (baby, everything is alright. Uptight! Out of sight). One of my favorite Anthro mugs fell to the floor and shattered, but I wasn’t even mad. I was just relieved that Winston and my head were out of the danger zone. I also had to get my safety goggles out (circa high school chemistry) due to some lime zest spraying. Safety first, kids. Don’t be fooled, baking is a full contact sport.

I decided to share a few of my favorite email subscriptions. Without sounding like Katie Couric and Sarah Palin here (the famous ‘What do you read?’ question that Palin couldn’t answer), I always enjoy hearing about what people are reading and finding new sources for information. I read a lot of news. A LOT. It’s kind of an addiction and you shouldn’t expect anything less from a Poli Sci/History nerd. In college I had a short lived Simmons Files, which was like a pre-Skimm news email that I compiled every morning at 7am. I selected the top five news stories (in my opinion) for that day, wrote a synopsis and sent it to my webmaster friend to send out. He is also the one who encouraged me to start a blog, so while the newsletter didn’t last, I was inspired to channel my creative writing outlet into this blog.

  • the kitchn – Yep, it is missing the ‘e’ on purpose. One of my favorite emails and I read it top to bottom. Helpful cooking tips and really unimportant conversations like ‘Why is the Vitamix superior?,’ unless you’re a foodie and then you eat this stuff up.
  • Next Draft – Similar to the Skimm, but sent every afternoon
  • Longreads – exactly what it sounds like, a compilation of long articles
  • Media REDEF – tech news
  • Brain Pickings – random, fascinating articles
  • The nerdy stuff: The Hill, Politico, WaPo, NYTimes, WSJ, and National Journal
  • BBC – they break American news faster than the Americans do
  • Elephant Journal – not really an email newsletter, but a rabbit hole for sure. Some people get sucked into thought catalog or pinterest. Nope, not me. Elephant Journal is a treasure trove of deep thoughts written by people you’ll never meet.

City grocery shopping – the struggle is real. Also, this is $62 worth of groceries. The Marsh is convenient, but I don’t even know what I bought for that much.



I had a work event this week that I had to staff at Growing Places Indy, which is housed at the Chase Eastside Legacy Center. If you have not been, go! I was so impressed and couldn’t believe I didn’t know about it. They have a U-Pick (I picked my own yellow cherry tomatoes – SO sweet) and a farm stand. I bought purple green beans (yes, there is such a thing) and celery. It is just past Mass Ave and next to Arsenal High School. Such a fun place and it made me happy to see that Indy is embracing the farm to table experience!




I am also blessed to live close to City Market and the Wednesday farmer’s market has become my lunchtime ritual. I took Winston this week and quickly realized that his paws were too hot. Thus, I carried my 31 pounds of love several blocks. I also ran into friends, so it was quite the bicep workout!




Recipe via table and dish 

2 sticks of butter at room temperature

2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar) sifted

1 large egg yolk at room temperature

pinch of salt

2 teaspoons of good tequila

zest of 4 limes

zest of one orange

Dried cherries

2 cups all-purpose flour


1/2 cup clear sanding sugar

2-3 teaspoons Kosher salt

1 large egg yolk

zest of one lime

Put the butter in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat at medium speed until it is smooth.

Add the confectioners’ sugar and beat again until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Beat in 1 egg yolk, pinch of salt, tequila, zest of 3 limes and zest of one orange.

Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the flour . Beat only until the flour is incorporated.  Do not over mix the dough. Add the dried cherries and blend with a rubber spatula

Turn the dough out onto a piece of parchment paper.  Use the paper to shape it into a tube shape log.  Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Take the dough out of the refrigerator. Roll it on the counter, unwrap it and brush the dough with the egg mixture. Roll the log in the sugar mixture. Press the sugar-salt mix onto the dough if needed.

Use a knife to slice the log into 1/4 inch cookies.  Place an inch apart on the parchment lined baking sheets.

Bake the cookies at 350 for 10-14 minutes

  1. The goggles are a nice touch😆 glad you liked the cookies. I’ll have to try it with cherries. I picked up some freeze dried blueberries at trader joes and have been meaning to give them a try in this. Thanks for the shout out.
