Yesterday I was lucky enough to participate in the Indy Pride parade and it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. Sure, I was excited to people watch and support LGBT rights, but I had no idea how meaningful it would be. My friend Tom texted me around 7am and asked if I’d like to get my parade on and without hesitation, I knew this was something I had to do. I put on my Walk in Love tank, some sassy red lipstick and my Stars and Stripes Converse, and walked to Indy Hub to meet the crew. I was greeted with Sun King, a mimosa and bloody Mary bar, quiche, granola and the works. We took our spots in the parade line and about an hour and a half later, we were walking! The parade route went by so quickly and I tried to take it all in as fast as I could.

Thousands of people were cheering, giving high fives and representing a whole lot of love. I quickly discovered that I am not the best bead thrower, but no one seemed to mind. There was something really special about passing the monuments downtown, with the colorful flags waving, and being proud of a city for coming together. Standing up for what is right and not letting a few elected officials speak for a state of more than 6 million people. A total of 17 churches were represented, along with Cummins, Lilly, Eskenazi Health, Salesforce, Walgreens, NCAA, Mayor Hogsett, and so many more passionate organizations.

I walked with the Enterprise Republicans, which is a group of mostly old school Mitch Daniels era Republicans that really care about this thing called civil rights. In full disclosure, I typically get Libertarian when I take the ideology quiz. Fiscally conservative, socially liberal. I am relieved to be in a job that does not only NOT frown on supporting what is fundamentally right, but actually created the design behind the ‘Indy Welcomes All’ campaign. I could not be prouder to see those iconic blue shirts all over Indy. We ended the day with short rib tacos and guac at Bakersfield and my heart was full of love. My tummy was full too.

Silver in the City


After my amazing day of celebrating equality, I woke up to the news that a man killed fifty people in a club in Orlando, FL. A horrible, unspeakable, tragedy and a reminder that there will always be injustice. The world is a scary place, but it will never get better without strong voices leading the way. I took Winnie to Starbucks for a long, Sunday morning of people watching and greetings from strangers. When you have a fluffy, rambunctious dog, you attract attention. The Indy Pride flags were still up at Bru Burger and Old Point Tavern, and it was the perfect time to reflect.

Since I was already a little down, I went to see ‘Me Before You‘ with my friends, LP and Ali. Two words: tear jerker. Oh my goodness, get the box of Kleenex ready because there was not a dry eye in the theater. I had even googled beforehand and was still a hot mess. I packed cookies thinking that could get us through the state of depression that was about to occur. If a man ever says the following line to me after the Symphony, I’d say he’s a keeper; “I just want to be a man who’s been to a concert with a girl in a red dress, just a few minutes more.” I’m glad I saw it, but plan on leaving with a red face and puffy eyeballs. If anything, the movie is all about getting out there and living life. If not now, when?

Onto the food part. I haven’t made too many new recipes lately, but I do have a job again that requires packing your lunch. The food options are endless in Fountain Square, but I’d prefer to take most of my paycheck home. It also tends to be healthier when I pack it. I rounded up a few of my favorite go-to lunches for all of you brown baggers out there.

  • roast chicken. I make this constantly, usually on a Sunday and then I have chicken to eat throughout the week. I’ll add it to salads or pack tortillas and make tacos.
  • cucumber, tomato, feta salad. I’ll add couscous or quinoa if I have some leftover. Protein and olives with a little balsamic as well.
  • the best chicken salad ever.
  • the BLMT. Yep, the M takes it to the next level.
  • double chopped salad – great base recipe and you can add whatever veggies you have!
  • lentil soup – some may say this is boring, but it is so healthy and I even like it cold.
  • orzo salad
  • avocado toast. It does not get any easier. If your office has a toaster, pack bread and an avocado.
  • pita, hummus, and Babybel cheese. Hardboiled eggs are great too.
  •  And it never hurts to have a little bit of dark chocolate hidden in your desk drawer. For antioxidant purposes, of course.
